How to track spending without linking your bank account
You can understand your spending without giving a budgeting app access to your bank. Choose how you want to bring in transactions, then build a small review habit.
Three ways to track without a bank connection
Bank linking is one way to bring transactions into a budgeting app. You can also enter them yourself or use a file you download directly from your bank.
| Method | Good for | What you’ll do |
|---|---|---|
| Manual entries | A few purchases or daily awareness | Record each purchase in a notebook or app. Check for missing entries against your statement. |
| Spreadsheet | Custom categories and your own calculations | Enter transactions or import a CSV if your bank provides one. Organize categories and totals yourself. |
| PDF statement import | A monthly review with less typing | Download a compatible statement, import it into an app such as Puggle, and check the extracted transactions. |
A simple monthly routine
Choose the period you want to review
Start with one statement period. If you use several cards or accounts, collect the statements that cover that period. Missing accounts will leave gaps in your picture.
Bring in the transactions
Download statements through your bank’s own app or website. For PDF import, use the original text-based PDF. A photograph or scanned statement may not contain text an importer can read.
Check before you categorize
Compare dates, amounts, and transaction counts with the original statement. Look for duplicates, refunds, and transfers. A card payment that also appears in your checking account should not be counted as a second purchase.
Keep categories useful
Begin with a handful: groceries, eating out, transport, household, and other spending. Split them further only when it helps you answer a question.
Choose one thing to watch next month
Look for a pattern you want to understand: repeated small purchases, an unusually large expense, or a category that changed. Keep the review short enough that you’ll repeat it.
How to use Puggle for statement-based tracking
Puggle is an iPhone expense tracker with PDF imports, manual transaction entry, and spending views. It does not require a connected bank account.
- Save a text-based PDF statement from your bank.
- Open Puggle and choose Import Statement.
- Review the extracted transactions, correcting amounts or categories where needed.
- Confirm the import, then explore Dashboard, History, and Insights.
Your financial data stays on your device. The free plan includes three statement imports per month; optional Pro access provides unlimited imports. Check the app for current purchase options.

When this approach fits—and when it doesn’t
Statement imports suit people who want to review spending periodically and prefer not to connect their bank accounts. They don’t provide a live feed: you’ll need to import another statement or add transactions manually to bring your records up to date.
If you need automatic account syncing, shared household access, or cloud recovery, check those requirements carefully before choosing an app. Puggle’s financial records are stored locally; deleting the app can remove those records.
